Historical Highlights2008Sun Street Centers celebrates 40 years of service. 2005Sun Street Centers establishes its fourth Community Recovery and Resource Center in the City of Greenfield as part of its Prevention Program. 2002The Men’s Residential Program expanded to include Family Empowerment Program counseling and support services to participants and family members. 2000The Nancy Dodd Community Center in Marina, CA, was established. 1999Preventing Alcohol Related Trauma in Salinas (PARTS), a nonprofit prevention organization, merges with Sun Street Centers to establish the first prevention component for SSC. 1998Sun Street Centers, in collaboration with several county agencies and nonprofits, established Pueblo Del Mar Family Recovery Community. 1997Sun Street Centers established the Employee Assistance Program, offering residential and outpatient recovery services for employees with third party insurance or an employee assistance plan. Sun Street Center begins providing Responsible Beverage Service Training (RBS) to Alcohol Retailers and Special Events groups in Salinas. 1993Sun Street Centers established Outpatient Recovery Services in Salinas. A second site is currently located in Marina. 1990The first Community Recovery and Resource Center providing services in community education, prevention and advocacy, was established in King City. Currently, Sun Street Centers operates three other Community Recovery Resource Centers located in Salinas (1992), Seaside (1993), and Greenfield (2005). 1985Sun Street Centers was one of four agencies approved by the County to provide both first and multiple offenders drinking-drive program (DDP) services. In 1990, SSC was elected to the county as the sole provider for first offender DDP services in Salinas and the Monterey Peninsula. 1982Sun Street Centers develops the Alcohol Certificate Studies programs at UC Santa Cruz Extension and Hartnell College. The UCSC program has since extended to all UC campuses. Sun Street Centers was selected by Monterey County to provide Driving Under the Influence education services to community members. 1980Sun Street Center established the Alcohol Awareness program in cooperation with the Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital and Hartnell College. This program published the Alcohol Awareness Digest and brought nationally-known experts in the field of alcoholism to Salinas: Betty Ford, Dr. Joseph Cruse, Dr. Ernest Noble, Tom and Katherine Pike, Claudia Black, and many others. 1974Sun Street Center opened the Swinging Door to address the problem of public inebriation and homelessness. The Swinging Door was closed in June 1996. 1968The Salinas Valley Council on Alcoholism refurbished an old labor camp at 8 Sun Street and established Sun Street Center. Founders Martin and Nancy Dodd and other community members began offering Men's Residential Recovery Services and Community Education. |
