Drug-Related Fatalities Top Deaths From Motor Vehicle Accidents

Social Host Ordinance unanimously approved by City Council

Salinas, CA February 1, 2011
The Salinas City Council approved a proposed fine increase to an underage drinking law in Salinas that would hit adults/parents who provide alcohol to minors. Sun Street Centers’ Safe Teens Empowerment Project (STEPS), a group of students from four different local high schools attended to the Salinas City Council meeting where they were honored by the council for their hard work within the community and dedication to the approval of Social Host Ordinance. East Salinas Parents Work to Reduce Alcohol and Drug Abuse Among Youth

Alcohol and drug prevention efforts have had a strong presence in Salinas for many years, especially in East Salinas. Sun Street Centers, a non-profit spearheading the majority of these activities, has long worked with parents to reduce the number of alcohol outlets present in their neighborhood, while providing parents with information on drugs and alcohol trends and tools for advocating for their community’s rights. Article on Four Loko:                                                                                               
I want to bring your attention to an issue that recently was featured in the article “Concern over alcoholic energy drinks after incident at Washington College” in the Monterey Herald. Nine students who drank a caffeinated malt liquor called Four Loko were hospitalized with blood alcohol levels ranging from 0.12 percent to 0.35 percent, and a female student nearly died. A 23.5-ounce can sells for about $2.50 and has an alcohol content of 12 percent, comparable to four beers. Continue reading →
